Hi everyone,

In February I started studying the book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards and now I have finally finished the very last assignment. Hurray!

However, I will quickly be talking about another assignment before the final one, which was practising hatching.

I really love hatching and hope to one day be able to really understand it as it’s one of the most beautiful techniques to me. At the moment though, I still have a long way to go!

The author described some simple ways to hatch and then suggested working hatching into your every day life to practise consistently i.e. instead of doodling while on the phone or whatever, practise your hatching.

Here’s what I came up with:

Day 18 - Hatching practise

Then I was asked to do my final assignment which was… another self-portrait!

I decided to do a front view portrait as that was what I did for my initial self-portrait on the first day of studying the book. Then I thought I would try to draw it in the style of the Steichen portrait I did i.e. low key and using my erazer to draw with. This obviously differs from my first self-portrait but  I really liked this technique when doing it and wanted to try it again without blending the figure fully into shadows.

I am pretty happy with the result. It ended up less detailed than I hoped for, but it does resemble me somewhat, at least enough to be used as a mug-shot for when I inevitably get chased down by the police!

I do think the lack of detail is largely because I am not too familiar with drawing with an erazer yet. I had a hard time getting sharper edges in there as you can see it all ended up very soft.

Overall though I am happy with it and will probably remember drawing it for the rest of my life as when I finally signed it and put it down I had an amazing feeling of getting something finished, yet realizing it was actually the first landmark on the start of my journey! Yes, I tend to get overly dramatic. It is the truth though, as happy as I was with it yesterday upon completion, I now, next morning, already look at it and think of it as a beginning.

Anyway! Here’s what I came up with for the final assignment of the book:

Day 18-19 - Final Self-portrait

And that’s it. The last assignment for this wonderful book. However, the final chapter isn’t over yet as I will be writing up a final review on the book over the next few days, so keep your eyes out for that too!

I am sure that down the line I will be reading this book again and again and probably doing the whole thing or parts of the assignments again as well as I think it will just be good to remind myself of all the teachings, techniques and theories within.

Will be going on a two week holiday today, visiting family back in Denmark, relaxing and really getting down to business on this art so I will keep the updates coming. If anything there will probably be more!

Have a nice one everyone,
