Adrian Smith Study

Today I got the blog to a point that I finally got happy with. There are still small things I need to change here and there, but the overall set up and design are down.

Due to this I decided to start sharing the site with friends and family.

Yesterday I played around with trying to copy a simple pencil hatching drawing done by Adrian Smith. This is a style I am very fond of and I wanted to see if I could pull it off. It turned out alright, but it will take some time before I really understand the application.

As I both wanted to work more with it and do some digital work, I decided to try and do it in Photoshop as well.

Below you can see the reference I used from Adrian Smith:

Below from left to right is my process of going from simple line work, to adding shadows and highlights and then the final is just me fooling around with textures.

While I did learn a thing or two, I think I will try to do this kind of thing with a pencil brush next time as it ended up a bit too cartoony and I should have spent more time looking at the reference as he looked a bit less intimidating in my version, but I did learn a thin or two!

That’s it for now.
