Environment Challenge: final Image

On 18 October, 2012 by mathjorgensen

Heya,

Yesterday was the deadline for the 2nd Environment Challenge one the Crimson Daggers forums and this is what I ended up:

Environment Challenge 2 - MathiasJ
This is the description of the challenge:
“This time the job is to create an environment where the natural plant life has been destroyed – by what or who is up to you. The inhabitants of this environment have taken it upon themselves to recreate the beauty of the plant life that once existed in this place using man made materials, glass, metal etc.”

I had a hard time figuring out how to create an environment like this and spent a little time working it over. Then I thought that I would create a race that lived in filth and had destroyed the plant life themselves, though they did enjoy the look of the plant life so they tried to re-create it the only way they knew how: with rubbish!

The ‘palm trees’ are supposed to look like they have been made out of a metal. I tried to show this by making them grey and giving them a very high reflection of light and then I added a worn layer of chipped paint to the ‘leaves’ to connect it more in the lines of rubbish.

The purple water was really just because I thought it would be a nice compliment to the rest of the color palette.

In the end I thought I would add the green creature working on putting up a new palm tree to emphasize the fact that they had been built.

I am not too happy with this image though.

The colour palette is way too saturated and makes it look very cartoon like and I realized when I finished it that I spent way too long on coming up with the image and too little time actually painting it. My skills aren’t that good yet and I should really just be trying to improve them.

I did enjoy this challenge though as it showed me where my weaknesses lie at the moment, and I now know what I have to work on.

All in all it was good fun.

Now! i wasn’t chosen as one of the members of the perspective class I signed up for, but I will still be following it once it starts to learn what I can as my practical knowledge of perspective still needs a lot of work.

I have also signed up for a portrait painting class where we will be working on various basic skills such as blending and light/shadow etc. while we’re being taught about portraiture. I am looking very much forward to this and have decided that when I am not working on homework for this I will be reading my Andrew Loomis book about the human skull/face to hopefully intensely increase my understanding over the next few weeks time. I hope that I will at least be able to start to paint crude but recognizable portraits by the end of this!

Other than that I have realized my lack of skill when it comes to using a stylus and digital painting so I will also be trying to do various photo/real life studies of things to increase my overall understanding of form and my hand/eye coordination.

That’s all for now,

-Mathias
