Book study: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (Day 8 & 9)

On 10 March, 2013 by eraza

Hey again,

Been slightly busy since last. Trying to really get to grips with this book.

In this chapter it was all about drawing what you see, no matter how weird or wrong you may think it looks and I also got to do my first ‘real’ drawing. Huzzah!

The first exercise was to look at objects with complex lines and then to draw those lines without looking at the paper. The trick behind it is to slow down your eye sight and slowly follow the lines while simultaneously drawing those lines at the same pace. It’s not so much about the result (which was horrible hah!) as it is disconnecting the left side of your brain and really focusing on the lines, angles and relationships of what you are observing.

Day 8 - Pure Contour Drawing

Then I had to start using my viewfinder and picture plane to do quick sketches of my hand with one eye closed. This eliminates the binocular vision you have when two eyes are open and ‘flattens’ what you’re looking at, making it easier to simplify it into lines.

Then I had to take the final sketch of my hand and turn it into my first realistic drawing. Yay!

This was really fun and I achieved much more than I thought I could. I learned a bunch from doing this and I will definitely consider doing this once in a while for general practise.

Below are the various stages of my drawing.

Day 8-9 - Modified Contour Drawing of Hand - Stage 1

Day 8-9 - Modified Contour Drawing of Hand - Stage 2

Day 8-9 - Modified Contour Drawing of Hand - Stage 3

That’s it for now. Will read on a bit and possibly do more exercises if they’re not too time consuming, however, I need to finish my daily sketches as well and hopefully squeeze in a gesture study session too!
